I used to use small zip lock bags to house the AA-batteries for my speedlite(s). However, they easily break down because I often had to change batteries to keep my flash gun up and running. So, to keep my AA-batteries organized, I got the ThinkTank Photo AA-battery holder.
With this wallet, you can put 8 AA-batteries at a time. And since I use re-chargeable batteries, I put up a system so that I will easily know if I have fresh, partly-used or depleted batteries: when all the positive terminals are showing, then that implies those batteries are fully-charged; for alternating (+)-and-(-) terminals, then I have partially used the batteries; all-negative terminals exposed, for my system, means that those batteries are depleted and they need to be recharged.
Of course you can use the same system for non-rechargeable batteries...

The Think Tank Photo AA-battery holder is made up of really good material and has a really good construction. I got two. Next up will be a wallet for my DSLR spare batteries. I give you one guess what brand it will be...
